<p>We&#8217;ve all heard of the benefits of water-only fasting. You know, the weight loss, clear skin, the improved digestion, the elimination of toxins, etc. And we all want these results for ourselves.</p>
<p>What we don&#8217;t want is the, well&#8230;the fast!</p>
<p>We don&#8217;t want to feel fatigue. We don&#8217;t want to feel uncomfortable. And we definitely don&#8217;t want to feel hungry. But apparently there&#8217;s a way we can have our cake and eat it too. It&#8217;s a little thing called &#8220;juice fasting&#8221;. So what exactly is juice fasting and can it really compare to fasting on nothing but water?</p>
<p>What&#8217;s the difference?</p>
<p>A water fast, also called a &#8220;water-only fast&#8221;, is just as it sounds. You consume nothing but water for a period of time. A typical long-term water fast lasts for about 21 days.</p>
<p>On the other hand, a juice fast consists of consuming nothing but raw fruit and vegetable juices. A typical juice fast lasts for about 30 days, although they can last for much much longer since you are still taking in fuel.</p>
<p>Fasting is Resting</p>
<p>Fasting is more than just not eating or only drinking juices. Fasting is really about RESTING.</p>
<p>And I don&#8217;t just mean resting the digestive system either. I mean resting the entire body. This means taking a break from life&#8217;s daily routine (i.e. getting up, going to work, taking care of the kids, going shopping, etc.) and sleeping as much as possible.</p>
<p>And when you aren&#8217;t sleeping, you should be lying down (or at the very least, sitting down) for the vast majority of the day.</p>
<p>So now that we know a bit about water and juice fasting, is juice fasting really just as good as water fasting?</p>
<p>Juicing is Not Fasting</p>
<p>Consuming anything other than water, even if it is in liquid form, is not a real fast. As Dr. Joel Fuhrman states in his book Fasting and Eating for Health:</p>
<p>&#8220;Juice fasting&#8221; is not truly fasting; biochemically the body does not enter the &#8220;protein-sparing&#8221; fasting state. In this state the body conserves its muscle reserves and fat is preferentially broken down. This does not occur with juice fasting.</p>
<p>Juice fasting also does not have the powerful anti-inflammatory properties of the pure water fast that are essential for recovery in autoimmune illnesses.</p>
<p>During a water fast, your body goes into a state called ketosis. Ketosis occurs when the body runs out of glucose for fuel and has to turn to stored fat instead. This shift usually starts on the second day of fasting and is finished by the third day, but the rate of fat that is broken down will continue to increase for the next few days.</p>
<p>Not only does ketosis mean that your hunger will greatly diminish (even disappear) by day 3, but it also means that you will get rid of a lot of excess weight.</p>
<p>On a juice fast, ketosis never happens because you are still eating. Since you are still taking in glucose from food, your body does not have to turn to its own fat reserves for fuel. Sure, your body may use some degree of stored fat if you are undereating on calories, but never to the extent that it will on a water fast. You can accomplish the same goal simply by dieting. And if you are undereating, which many people tend to do while juice fasting, you will still be hungry. Remember, hunger only disappears on a water fast because you are no longer taking in any fuel.</p>
<p>And remember, fasting equates to resting. Juice fasting cannot compete with water fasting in this regard because your body still has to work to digest the juices you consume.</p>
<p>Juicing is Still Eating</p>
<p>Many people prefer juice fasting over water fasting because they equate not eating for a period of time with starvation. They are afraid that if they consume nothing but water for more than a couple of days that their body will start to consume its own healthy muscles, tissues, and organs.</p>
<p>This could not be further from the truth. Again from Fasting and Eating for Health:</p>
<p>When no calories are consumed, the body is living off its nutritional stores, primarily its fat reserves. The innate wisdom of the body is such that while fasting, it will consume for its sustenance superfluous tissues, carefully conserving vital tissues and organs.</p>
<p>Human beings have evolved to fast when we are in poor health. You will notice that other animals do this as well; they lose their appetite and refuse to eat until their health is restored.</p>
<p>This would not make sense if once we stopped eating, our body immediately started catabolizing all of our healthy organs. Instead, the body uses up everything that is unnecessary or harmful, such as excess fat and diseased tissue.</p>
<p>And your body even has a signal to let you know when this process is over&#8230;HUNGER! You know when it&#8217;s time to eat again once your hunger returns.</p>
<p>On a juice fast, you will never be able to experience the deep healing that occurs on water-only. Your body has to deal with the digestion of the juices you consume first and foremost rather than the elimination and repair of diseased and damaged cells.</p>
<p>NOTE: While water-only fasting is clearly an evolutionary survival mechanism, that&#8217;s not to say that it isn&#8217;t risky. People tend to be in very poor health, much more so than they often realize, and complications can and do occur during a long-term fast.</p>
<p>This is why it&#8217;s always recommended for anyone planning to fast for more than a few days to seek qualified professional supervision.</p>
<p>Is There Any Reason to Juice Fast?</p>
<p>Not really. Remember, juiced foods are refined foods. Juiced foods have had their fiber removed and can no longer be considered a whole food.</p>
<p>And while people like to consume juices for cleansing and detox purposes, this is completely unnecessary on a simple whole foods diet. As long as you are eating a healthy raw vegan diet of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, then you have no reason to juice fast.</p>
<p>If you do feel the need to cleanse for whatever reason (i.e you spent the week munching on veggie burgers and vegan burritos, perhaps), take a trip to Banana Island (nothing but bananas and water) instead of juice fasting. Eating this simply for a few days or so will help you get back on track without sacrificing your need for calories and satiation.</p>
<p>And if you can take the time to rest, don&#8217;t be afraid to opt for a short 1-3 day water fast.</p>

<p>We all overindulged this past holiday season and are eager to get back into shape or, in the case of some of us, get into shape. One of the most common New Years resolutions is to lose weight and get fit. Sales for gym equipment and nutritional supplements skyrocket in the month of January. The poor UPS driver experiences a large increase in the number of elliptical trainers and treadmills he has to unload and deliver. And everyone starts researching products that help us get started. &#8220;Detox&#8221; and &#8220;body cleanse&#8221; are entered into search engines at lightening speed. In the age of instant everything, we expect to find easy remedies for bad habits.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, there really aren&#8217;t any quick fixes for bodily abuse. You didn&#8217;t end up overweight and flabby overnight and the problem isn&#8217;t going to get fixed without that old fashioned stand-by called effort. But, if you&#8217;re ready to commit to a lifestyle change, a healthier and leaner body can be achieved. And it doesn&#8217;t have to cost an arm and a leg nor does it have to involve drinking disgusting concoctions while fasting and feeling weak. As a matter of fact, the worst thing you can do is restrict calories by fasting. It puts your body in starvation mode and tells it to save fat.</p>
<p>The other day I made myself a berry, citrus, kale, apple, banana smoothie for breakfast. I couldn&#8217;t finish it so put the rest in a tall glass, covered it with plastic wrap, and stuck it in the fridge. When I got home, it didn&#8217;t look all the appetizing so I went to dump it out in the sink. I held the glass upside down and nothing came out. The kale and fruit sediment had apparently absorbed all the liquid and it all became kind of a solid mass. It was a great illustration for what happens in the colon when we don&#8217;t consume enough liquid to keep things flowing. So, number one on the hit parade of products that we need for a total body cleanse is good, clean water. Sip water all day long. Set a water consumption goal. Increase it daily until you are drinking a healthy amount. An average sized woman needs about 70 ounces of water daily. Drink more if you&#8217;re physically active.</p>
<p>Nature has provided all you need to keep your body healthy. Manufacturers cannot successfully duplicate what is already available. Fruit and vegetables help clean up your body just fine. The only caveat here is to add them slowly if you&#8217;re not used to all that fiber. Add one serving each of a fruit and vegetable to your diet daily until you are eating healthy amounts. Kale packs a great nutritional punch. Citrus is a great fruit for cleansing your insides. What you want to avoid is twisting your gut up with too much too soon. Drink lots of water so you don&#8217;t get clogged up like that mass in the glass I had yesterday. Make a good vegetable fruit smoothie and sip throughout the day. Add some ground flax seed to thicken and add fiber. Flax seed is a great source of Omega 3&#8242;s and fiber and also has some anti-oxidant properties.</p>
<p>Digestion begins in the mouth. Chew well. Eat slowly. Make sure you&#8217;re dining in a relaxed atmosphere. Avoid refined sugars and carbohydrates. Switch from coffee to green tea. Add some chamomile in the evening. Dandelion root tea helps clear the system so sip a cup in the afternoon. Have a nice salad for dinner. Make sure to include healthy greens like spinach. Leave out the iceberg lettuce as it has very little nutritional value. Use a basic salad dressing that has an olive oil base. Throw on a few walnuts for protein.</p>
<p>Transit time is important to keep track of so you know you are eating properly and keeping your engine clean. Every now and again, add some beets or some other &#8220;dye&#8221; to your diet so you can see how long it is taking for food to travel from one end to the other. Carrot juice is a favorite of mine. Experts differ on what constitutes a healthy amount of time for food to commute from to coast but 12 to 24 hours is average for someone consuming adequate fiber.</p>

<p>In today&#8217;s world, in which is organically grown food, active lifestyle, outdoor activity and clean environment &#8211; water, air, soil &#8211; rather an exception than rule, where we have in almost every store, enormous amounts of industrially produced and industrially processed food, where food is packed in packing materials which are anything but natural, biodegradable and men friendly, enters into the body a lot of substances that simply shouldn&#8217;t enter. Even if a man is eating properly and exercises in accordance with his nutrogenomical profile and regularly applies all the methods that are successful in stress management, it is impossible to completely avoid all the pollution factors that are out there and are influencing on our body and therefore health.</p>
<p>With ageing our body is becoming more and more polluted and therefore its performance starts to decline. So the presence of toxins in our body is automatically and completely needles, leading to so-called &#8220;old-age diseases&#8221;.</p>
<p>So in order to keep your organism to function properly and that you will stay younger for longer, it is advisable to detoxicate your body from time to time.</p>
<p>In any case, it is recommended to do the body detoxification at least twice a year: in autumn, when the sun passes through the sign of Scorpio (the last week of October and the first three weeks in November), and in spring, in the last six weeks before Easter.</p>
<p>In the case of certain diseases or health problems caused by long-term toxification of the organism, or before a person is considering to undertake an intensive weight loss diet, it is advisable to detoxicate your body once outside this period. This of course should be consulted with a doctor or other qualified professional in the field of health care.</p>

<p>It has always been our health that declines throughout the year when we are engaging in so many day-to-day activities. Living in a world where everything happens fast, we have to adapt as well to the rapid changes. Quick solutions for a healthy diet seem to be the only answer that can help. So to start a diet for a day might just kick things off, that will help you to make that imperishable commitment. Although short-term diets will not guarantee permanent results, a start towards such a diet is better than not doing anything at all.</p>
<p>Studies have shown that a detox method like colonic irrigation, or the right food combining can change things around quickly for you. Things like Vegetables are excellent sources of beta-carotene (This comes from vitamin A), vitamin C, and some B vitamins. &#8220;Super&#8221; vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, swedish turnip, cabbage, and tomatoes can be the answer to the diet equation. These normally help to keep your eyes, bones and skin healthy.</p>
<p>The following combinations of fruit and vegetables need to be consumed throughout the day while breaking it into six small meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in between the main meals). This is a great place to start your diet for a day which can continue during the week as well.</p>
<p>Fruit diet for a day:</p>
<p>Fruits are naturally sweet, and high in vitamins &#038; fibre. It is also rich in antioxidants, and low in calories &#038; fat. The antioxidants will destroy any harmful substances in the body, and will be very important for your dieting needs.</p>
<p>1. Three apricots or two plums<br />2. One wedge of melon<br />3. One medium size apple or pear<br />4. One tablespoon of raisins<br />5. Half a grapefruit<br />6. 150 ml of 100% fruit juice.</p>
<p>Your vegetable diet for a day:</p>
<p>Be sure to retain the nutrients in the vegetables by either steaming, or microwave it for a short amount of time. Do not use additional components like cream, butter or margarine for extra flavour. Instead, use freshly ground pepper, lemon juice or chopped herbs for a greater taste.</p>
<p>1. Eight Brussels sprouts (Also very high in fibre)<br />2. One medium or 7 cherry tomatoes<br />3. One cereal bowl of salad leaves<br />4. Serving of cooked carrots or peas (High in fibre)<br />5. Piece of cucumber (5cm)<br />6. One corn-on-the-cob</p>
<p>These combinations make ideal snacks, and can easily be prepared before work. You will boost your energy due to consuming 100% nutritious food. Get into the habit of buying a good selection of fruit, and vegetables the night before.
